Book of Remembrance

Once the Fisherman sculpture was completed and proudly displayed, our commitment to preserving the legacy of North Shields fishermen pushed us forward to create the Book of Remembrance. This heartfelt project was initiated in 2018 and was an integral part of our initial vision – a way to honour and record the names of the brave men who embarked on the fishing voyages from SN.
This commemorative book serves as a tribute not only to those who tragically didn’t return home but also to the men who passed away ashore.

Hand made and bound using the finest high quality paper by John Layburn of Darlington it is a testament to true craftsmanship.
Every entry is carefully inscribed by the skilled hands of Tim Sokell, Sue Hufton, and the late Susan Moor – the finest calligraphers hailing from the North East.

Join us on a journey through time as we honour the legacy of North Shields’ brave fishermen and preserve the rich heritage of our fishing community.
The book was blessed by The Right Reverend Christine Hardman Bishop of Newcastle at a service in Christ Church on Sunday 24th of November 2019. Unveiled on the following day the 25th of November at North Shields Central Library by The elected Mayor the now Dame Norma Redfern D.B.E.
When a Fisherman passes his family fill in a simple registration document. The details of which are checked by our trustees ready to be entered into the Book of Remembrance. The book is taken from its place of display in North Shields Central Library and updated twice a year. It then is replaced in its display cabinet in the Discovery section of the library. Every morning the page is turned displaying the names of the Fishermen who passed on that day.
We are very happy with the book and how it works providing a special place of remembrance for the families of their loved ones. The book is also used as a teaching aid and can be used for research.
It is hoped that The Book of Remembrance will become an Historical Document recording the names of all the men who fished from SN.
